Marsh Hen Hunting in Coastal Georgia

About

Marsh Hen Hunting

If you’re a wingshooter and have never targeted marsh hens – more properly called rail birds – you should go. Now!

Marsh hens live in the same places where redfish run wild, chasing baitfish and crabs during high tides in the fall. If you’re an inshore angler, you’ve likely heard marsh hens make that rapid, intense and strange little “geeh, geeh, geehhkk” call from dense marsh near salt creeks and Intracoastal Waterway regions.

In fact, making combo fishing/rail bird hunting trips is a snap to do, because the same high-tide conditions that make for great sight fishing for tailing redfish and sheepshead, works for marsh hens.

About Marsh Hen Hunting in Georgia

Marsh hens (clapper rails) live in the salt marshes that surround St. Simons Island and Brunswick. Hunts are timed around the highest fall tides, when flooding water pushes birds out of the spartina grass. Hunters work the flooded marsh by boat and take shots as the birds flush.

  • Hunts are scheduled around fall high-tide windows, so book well ahead.
  • Hunters need a valid Georgia hunting license and HIP certification; Capt. Greg will confirm current season dates and regulations.
  • Ask Capt. Greg what gear to bring when you book.

Hunting parties meet at St. Simons Marina, convenient for hunters coming from Brunswick, Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island.
